Training Tip: Choose Wisely.

We use trap bar deadlifts for the reward of max strength with less risk of form break down, excessive lumbar flexion, rounding of the spine ,whole spine period rounding and feeling beat up.

Training time is precious. We want more bang for our buck in less time in the strength room to recover for skill workouts.

The skills pay the bills.

Be care with exercise selection, consider the risk vs reward of it, for example, we don’t use behind the head over head Barbell presses, one reason the close packed position of the shoulder joint.

We use exercises that get us strong without feeling excessively beat up with the risk of injury due to technical complexity and more importantly are patterns in our striking sport. ( The squat, bend, lunge, twist, hinge, pull, and press all are.)

Powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, Strong Man training are ALL sports within their own.

Practice and train for skill, become stronger, faster, and more explosive with exercise that make sense for your training age, training experience, and fighting art at hand

Gym Life: Bein g A Coach.

One of my favorite fighters I’ve trained from scratch, Bryant Robinson back in the gym, out of shape but it’s great to see him and have him around.

He started here when he was 16 and for years I would take him to the bus stop after the gym, leave the gym to go pick him up downtown from the main bus stop hub, give him $$ to ride the bus, and take him home on the Eastside when he missed the bus.

I did it because I am his coach and I enjoyed watching him fight when working his corner, I was proud that he was started from scratch here and excelled when I matched him TOUGH, some of the things he would naturally do in the ring amazed me, all that was worth the bus fare and driving him around.

His life evolved, he found other interests, rapping for one and being very good at it to create a solid name for himself, I was still severely disappointed to see him leave boxing.

But

It feels great to see him in the gym

Again training, he says he wants to give it another go, we will see.
But having him around and the memories and great experiences we both have had as they come back, makes me feel really good.

The game can break your heart and also pump it full of life, that I know through my years in it

A True Throw Back Fighter.

Andre Ward, now retired, must be look upon ada throw back fighter in the sense of how he welcomed THE BEST and THRIVED against that elite competition.

He has not lost a fight since he was 11 yrs young for a reason.

He knows how to utilize his awkward style and yes although extremely boring, it’s also extremely effective at neutralizing opponents strengths.

Andre just knows how to win.

Against the Best

A thinking, adjusting, and ring generalship master.

Trainers: Choose Wisely.

Some strength& conditioning/ fitness trainers are better off working for someone else, the true technicians, that is, because once they go out on their own and open their own business, they aren’t ready to be the manager, and the entrepreneur.

For them, it kills their passion as a technician (trainer). They exit the industry weary and beaten.

It’s ok not to open your own business, in fact for you, it may be a better option.
