Throw Back Friday Edition: Charley Burley

In this weeks edition of throw back Friday we have Charley Burley. I first learned of Charley from my old school trainer Eddie in Syracuse NY over 10 years ago. He raved on how brilliant Charley was in the ring and how nobody would fight him and how he never got the recognition from being a champion he deserved.

Read on why I have this ring genius ranked #10 on my all time p4p list and watch for yourself the greatness he displayed in the ring.

Charlie Burley: 84 Wins/50 K.O.’s/2 Draws/1 No Contest

The great late trainer Eddie Futch called Burley “The greatest all around fighter I ever saw” Ironically Burley never fought for a World Title. He fought in the era with Sugar Ray Robinson, Tony Zale, Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMotta.

Burley like Langford was avoided heavily. Even Sugar Ray Robinson denied Burley a fight saying ‘I’m to pretty to fight Charlie Burley”. Burley did beat Archie Moore. Moore would later say that Burley was the best fighter he ever faced. Charley fought Ezzard Charles losing twice. The often sited reason Burley never got his title shot was because he was too good for his own good. Given the chance, I’m sure there would be much more to say of Burley. The fact that he was avoided by the best speaks for itself on how good he really was.
