Throw Back Friday Edition: Michael Nunn.

Former middleweight and super middleweight champion Michael was a fighter that was well on his way to greatness. He seemed to have it all, speed, timing, reflexes, footwork and gifted athleticism. He had everything but focus and discipline. That’s what kept him from reaching the greatness that was within his grasp.

I think a prime Nunn is great to watch and pick certain things from. While I didn’t like his showboating with his hands down to his waist, his footwork and offensive combos are very good to watch.

Mike beat some good fighters like Frank Tate in 88 winning the middleweight championship. He also beat Marlon Starling and Iran Barkley. He lost to a great one in James Toney, and lost to some good ones in Steve Little which was a huge upset loosing his super middleweight championship and loosing to Frankie Liles in a bid to regain it. Nunn beat Victor Cordoba in 92 to win the super middleweight title. He defended it four times before being upset by Little.

Nunn left some great fights behind, like a potential match up with Roy Jones Jr. That would have been fun to watch on a boxing purists level.

Check this clip out and see for yourself just how brilliant Nunn was in his prime and you’ll know why many consider his career a huge disappointment considering the talent he possessed and the road he took while his career was dwindling down. Nunn has been serving a drug related prison term since May 2003. His scheduled release date is June 16, 2024.

It’s disgusting thinking about that after watching this clip.

Weekend Wrap Up: Ruling With An Iron Fist.

klitschkowins1a
Klitschko-Peter II was thought to be an intriguing fight leading up to it. Sam Peter was in the best shape of his life and appeared to have some of his nasty KO swag back.

Well after the first round Wlad took all that and the fight away from peter with his dominating performance. Wlad used his long and heavy jab to set up heavy right hands from a safe distance that wobbled Peter early and just knocked the confidence right out of him.

Peter just couldn’t cut the distance effectively and punch without smothering his punches. That was the fight, Wlad wrapped him up on the inside neutralizing Peter’s power. Wlad then pick and battered Sam from the outside.

It was a one sided clinic, round after round. boring but impressively dominating on Klitschko’s part,

I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of Wlad but Manny Steward has been doing a great job over the years and Wlad doing his part by executing.

It’s going to take a heavy handed nasty puncher with quick feet, and head movement to beat both Klitschkos, a big set of balls and a huge heart as well. These guys aren’t giving up their titles easy, so some heavyweight.. I have no fucking clue who, as to bring their A++++ game!

Gamboa Lights it Up!

gamboa

Yuriorkis Gamboa dominated Orlando Salido so bad he looked bored at times and got caught with stupid shots because of it. Salido fought brave with a lot of heart but he had nothing for Gamboa.

Gamboa looked reckless still at times but he’s not as reckless as he used to be. I think he was bored and not really up for this fight. That’s no excuse, but this guy is so talanted that he needs to be challenged to stimulate his performance.

Juanma Lopez is just the fighter to do that but that is for a much later date as this future fight brews with huge anticipation.

Gamboa is still improving, settling down a bit, and I feel the best is yet to come with him. The dude is just SO fast and his timing/anticipation, amazing! How can you not say an see that his upside is huge?!

Throw Back Friday Edition: Gerald McClellan

The ” G- Man ” was one of my favorite fighters growing up. His attitude and the way he punched and fought in the ring was stellar.

Who knows how great Gerald could have been? Many and myself think that if it wasn’t for the tragic Nigel Benn fight, we would consider him a lock as an all time great today.

He was that good.

I often show clips of Gerald to my fighters in my gym and have them study his punching leverage, space, timing, and how he ripped to the body.

Watch this clip on how Gerald would get terrific leverage on his punches, watch on how he would finish with that numbing left hook to the body, ( body work is a lost art today! ), watch his accuracy and timing, watch his attitude of not giving a fuck while taking intelligent risks in the ring that gave him awesome and thrilling victories over other viscous punchers like Julian ” The Hawk ” Jackson.

Emmanuel Steward did a great job with Gerald and Manny has said that Gerald was pound for pound probably the best fighter he’s trained this far in his career.

That says a lot and they clips show and teach a lot. Watch and study them now!
